Welcome!
Welcome to the website of
Maidenhead Liberal Democrats
. We bring you news and views from the area.
The Liberal Democrats believe that it is
important to keep in touch with local
residents, and to campaign on the issues
that matter to you.
In a recession the borough needs to make an extra effort to get people into its town centres.Improving the car parking experience is just one such effort
Cllr Simon Werner said "The LibDems put forward a three point plan to make car parking better.
Firstly to reduce short term parking costs to make it more affordable.
LibDems have asked the council to be clearer in telling the public what councillors get.
Cllr Kathy Newbound said "Councillors sit on many outside bodiesmost of which do not give any extra remuneraiton. However some like the police and fire authorities do pay councillors for their time. As a result of LibDems raising this at full councilthe borough is now going to publish what these monies are.
LibDems are concerned that only three of the first eleven play areas to be improved are in the urban part of Maidenhead. If the selection of sites was done purely on actual number of children Maidenhead would now be getting five or sixe areas being made over.
Cllr Kathy Newbound said "The Tories say that the sites are chosen by calculating many things such as age and conditions of the equipment.
LibDems welcome more detail being given on councillors expenses and how much being spent being out in the open.
Cllr Simon Werner said "it is good to compare. The BBC have recently looked at how 373 councils changed the amount paid in councillor allowances in the years 2004 to 2008. Had they looked at 2008/9 they would have picked up the 91 % incease put through by the Tory councillors in the Royal Borough.
Research by LibDems show just how a high price residents have to pay to travel on our local railways. At 70 p per mile First Great Western is the most expensive train operating company to travel on in the United Kingdom.
Cllr Simon Werner said, "If this was not bad enough government forces regulated fares to go up one per cent above the level of inflation every year. Is this fair?"
LibDems are campaigning against these continuing excessive rail rises.
So far the Tories have not restored any of the bus cuts they made despite 3 petitions being presented to them at the last council meeting protesting at their actions.
All the council has agreed to is a bus surgery on March 16 near St Mary's School on the Cookham Roadnear the route of the axed number 6 bus.The opening hours in the mobile unit that is coming will be 11 to 6.
